SIGNS OF SEXUAL ABUSE

Sexual abuse is any type of sexual activity or contact that occurs without the consent of the victim. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or race.

There are many signs of sexual abuse, but not everyone who has been sexually abused will show any signs. Some common signs of sexual abuse include:

  • Physical changes: These can include unexplained bruises, cuts, or other injuries, as well as sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Changes in behavior: These can include changes in eating or sleeping habits, withdrawal from friends and family, or changes in mood or personality.
  • Changes in school performance: These can include a drop in grades, difficulty concentrating, or changes in behavior in the classroom.
  • Recurrent nightmares or flashbacks: These can be about the abuse or about other traumatic events.
  • Fear of certain people or places: This can include fear of the abuser, fear of being alone, or fear of certain places where the abuse happened.
  • Self-destructive behavior: This can include self-harm, substance abuse, or suicidal thoughts.

If you are concerned that someone you know may have been sexually abused, it is important to talk to them about it. You can also report the abuse to the authorities.

It is important to remember that sexual abuse is never the victim's fault. If you have been sexually abused, there are people who can help you. You are not alone.
