PARTS OF THE CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM

Child welfare is a broad term that refers to the system of services and programs that are designed to protect children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Child welfare agencies work with families to prevent problems from happening, to help families when problems do happen, and to find permanent homes for children who cannot live with their birth families.

The child welfare system is a complex system that is made up of many different parts. These parts include:

  • Child protective services (CPS): CPS is the agency that investigates reports of child abuse and neglect. CPS workers are responsible for determining whether or not a child is in danger and for taking steps to protect the child.
  • Foster care: Foster care is a temporary living arrangement for children who cannot live with their birth families. Foster parents provide a safe and loving home for children in foster care.
  • Adoption: Adoption is a permanent way for a child to have a family. Adoption can be arranged through the child welfare system or through a private agency.
  • Prevention services: Prevention services are designed to help families before problems happen. These services can include parenting classes, counseling, and financial assistance.

The child welfare system is constantly evolving as we learn more about how to best protect children. The goal of the child welfare system is to ensure that all children have a safe and loving home.

Here are some of the things that child welfare workers do:

  • Investigate reports of child abuse and neglect: When a report of child abuse or neglect is made, child welfare workers must investigate to determine if the child is in danger.
  • Provide services to families: Child welfare workers can provide a variety of services to families, such as counseling, parenting classes, and financial assistance.
  • Place children in foster care: If a child is found to be in danger, child welfare workers may place the child in foster care.
  • Find permanent homes for children: Child welfare workers work to find permanent homes for children who cannot live with their birth families. This may involve placing the child with relatives, in an adoptive home, or in a group home.

Child welfare is a challenging but important work. Child welfare workers play a vital role in protecting children and helping families. If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, please report it to your local child welfare agency.
